Refractory materials are crucial in the steel industry due to their extreme heat-resistance properties, which prevents damage to the furnace from molten metal and mechanical impacts. Whilst refractories are able to withstand extreme temperatures at a constant, they are highly vulnerable to thermal shock when temperature fluctuations cause steep thermal gradients.

The application of Fibrex fibres significantly reduces the risk of cracking due to the complex network of fibres created within the refractory monolithic or pre-cast and positively reduces crack propagation, which extends the operating life of the refractory and reduces the risk of production failure.
